On Wednesday September 25th, 2019, the Beaumier award for High School/CEGEP Teachers was awarded to François Raymond from Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf. The ceremony took place in the teaching labs of the CEGEP located in Outremont, close to Université de Montréal and where most of the members of the chemistry department had assembled.

According to Claudio Marrano, his colleague, “[Mr. Raymond] is always on the lookout for better computer-based tools to help students better vizualize the concepts he teaches. Office Suite softwares and more specialized molecular modelling tools alike.” Mr. Raymond distinguishes himself by his implication in several programs like the Chemistry Olympiad and the Canadian Chemistry Competition and by his availability to his students on a day-to-day basis and especially as exams are looming or for “personnal specific scientific projects like Expo Science or BioGenius.”

The Beaumier Award for High School/CÉGEP Chemistry Teachers is presented in recognition of excellence in teaching chemistry at the high school or CEGEP level and to encourage and promote chemistry at the high school and Cégep level in Canada. It is kindly sponsored by the Beaumier Churcott Foundation. The plaque and reward were given by Ashlee Howarth, chair of the CIC local section, and Fabien Hammerer, former chair (2017-2019), representing the CIC.

“This is a personal award but I see it as a team award.” said Raymond who proceeded to mention by name all of his collaborators and how they helped him on a day-to-day basis. Mr. Raymond was nominated by a former student and two of his colloeagues who had also prepared speeches for the occasion.
